Title:  An act relating to vehicle identification number inspections on out‑of‑state vehicles.

Background:  The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is charged with conducting inspections of Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) on vehicles brought in from out of state.

 

If the vehicle passes WSP=s VIN inspection, the vehicle can be licensed in the state.  The primary purpose of VIN inspections is to prevent stolen vehicles or vehicle parts from being imported into Washington and sold in this state.

 

Summary of Bill:  County auditors and subagents are authorized to conduct VIN inspections.  If there is a reasonable belief that a vehicle may be stolen, WSP retains authority to conduct a VIN inspection on that bill.

 

Appropriation:  None.

 

Fiscal Note:  Not requested.

 

Effective Date:  Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
