Background:  Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) ministers or other clergy persons, employed as chaplains in  state institutions or agencies, can claim up to 40 percent of their gross salary as housing allowance, to the extent used by them to rent or provide a home.

 

Summary of Bill:   PERS ministers or other clergy persons, either employed as or retired from employment as chaplains in state institutions or agencies, can claim up to 100 percent of their gross salary as housing allowance, to the extent used by them to rent or provide a home.

 

The members are responsible for providing supporting documentation when reporting to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

 

Appropriation:  None.

 

Fiscal Note:  Requested on January 15, 1998

 

Effective Date:  Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
