BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:
NEW SECTION. Sec. 1. (1) The legislature recognizes the significant role of women who have served, or are serving, in the defense of the nation in the United States armed services. Pursuant to P.L. 99-610, congress has authorized the formation of a nonprofit foundation to supervise the creation of an appropriate monument memorializing the role of women in the nation's military service. The Women in Military Service for America Memorial is currently under construction on the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery and has been supported by contributions from private donors, veterans, and civic organizations, and foreign and state governments.
(2) The sum of fifty thousand dollars, or as much thereof as may be necessary, is appropriated for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1998, from the state general fund to the department of veterans affairs for allocation to the Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation, Inc., for the purposes of contributing to the cost of constructing a memorial honoring the role of women in the nation's military services.
