Requiring a study of teen mothers and adult fathers.


    AN ACT Relating to teen pregnancies; creating a new section; making an appropriation; providing an effective date; and declaring an emergency.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

    NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  The department of health shall contract with a community-based service organization for a research study of births to teen mothers and adult fathers.  The study shall provide demographic information on the adult fathers, the extent to which they support their children, the incidence of statutory rape charges filed, and such other information as the department of health may require.  The department shall submit the results of the research study to the appropriate committees of the senate and house of representatives no later than June 1, 1998.

 

    NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.  The sum of two hundred forty thousand dollars, or as much thereof as may be necessary, is appropriated for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1998, from the general fund to the department of health for the purposes of this act.

 

    NEW SECTION.  Sec. 3.  This act is necessary for the immediate preservation of the public peace, health, or safety, or support of the state government and its existing public institutions, and takes effect July 1, 1997.
