Requiring parental consent for certain nonacademic subjects.


    AN ACT Relating to the teaching of nonacademic subjects; adding a new section to chapter 28A.150 RCW; and creating a new section.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

    NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 28A.150 RCW to read as follows:

    NONACADEMIC INSTRUCTION. (1) Schools desiring to provide instruction in nonacademic subject matter regarding suicide, euthanasia, or human sexuality issues dealing with sex education, sexually transmitted diseases, contraception, or sexual orientation, must provide such instruction as an independent unit within a curriculum offering.  Incidental conversations regarding the subjects in this section that are student-led and student-initiated may not be discouraged.  However, teachers may not elicit student discussion regarding any of the subject matters in this section outside of the independent unit offering.

    (2) All independent units offered under this section shall be elective and require prior parental written consent before a student participates in the unit offering.

 

    NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.  CAPTIONS NOT LAW.  Captions used in this act are not any part of the law.
