TO THE HONORABLE SID MORRISON, SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION, AND TO THE WASHINGTON STATE TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION, AND TO THE WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION:
We, your Memorialists, the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Washington, in legislative session assembled, respectfully represent and petition as follows:
WHEREAS, President Franklin D. Roosevelt described the attack on United States forces at Pearl Harbor on the Island of Oahu, Hawaii, by the Japanese military on December 7, 1941, as "a day which will live in infamy"; and
WHEREAS, Two thousand three hundred forty-one brave American military personnel and fifty-four civilians lost their lives defending United States warships, airfields, and port facilities during the surprise attack; and
WHEREAS, The exceptional efforts of members of the American armed forces and civilian repair personnel enabled all of the warships that were damaged during the attack to be repaired and see action during World War II, with the exception of the U.S.S. Arizona, the U.S.S. Utah, and the U.S.S. Oklahoma; and
WHEREAS, Our country continues to owe a great debt of gratitude to those who risked their lives to defend our nation on that fateful day;
NOW, THEREFORE, Your Memorialists respectfully pray that the Washington State Transportation Commission commence proceedings to name the Sequim Bypass on State Route 101 "The Pearl Harbor Memorial Bypass," and that the ceremony to name the bypass take place on the date it is dedicated and opened to the public.
BE IT RESOLVED, That copies of this Memorial be immediately transmitted to the Honorable Sid Morrison, Secretary of Transportation, the Washington State Transportation Commission, and to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
