HOUSE JOINT MEMORIAL 4017
_______________________________________________
State of Washington 55th Legislature 1997 Regular Session
By Representatives Sheldon and Johnson
Read first time 02/27/97. Referred to Committee on Transportation Policy & Budget.
TO THE WASHINGTON STATE TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION:
We, your Memorialists, the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Washington, in legislative session assembled, respectfully represent and petition as follows:
WHEREAS, It all too often takes a needless tragedy to focus public attention on serious problems that need to be addressed; and
WHEREAS, Far too many such tragedies come in the form of fatality accidents on our highways, and clearly point out the need for improved safety on our public roads and highways; and
WHEREAS, Just such a tragedy in 1973 focused attention on the need for an overpass at the junction of State Route 101 with the Mud Bay Road at Mud Bay; and
WHEREAS, Because of the losses caused in such accidents, it is right and proper that we remember to acknowledge the debt of gratitude we owe to all of those people who unknowingly improved our lives and safety through their sacrifice; and
WHEREAS, We owe just such a debt to Lena Hilliard, whose untimely death in 1973, at the junction of Mud Bay Road and State Route 101, focused public attention on the urgent need for the construction of an overpass and other safety improvements at the Mud Bay interchange in order to prevent future needless suffering and loss of life; and
WHEREAS, Naming the overpass in her honor is a fitting and proper tribute to Lena Hilliard and to her entire family;
NOW, THEREFORE, Your Memorialists respectfully pray that the Washington State Transportation Commission name the overpass at Mud Bay after Lena Hilliard.
BE IT RESOLVED, That copies of this Memorial be immediately transmitted to the Washington State Transportation Commission.
