Honoring law enforcement officers.


    TO THE HONORABLE GARY LOCKE, GOVERNOR, MEMBERS OF THE STATE CAPITOL COMMITTEE, MEMBERS OF THE WASHINGTON STATE LAW ENFORCEMENT MEMORIAL COMMITTEE, THE DIRECTOR OF THE DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL ADMINISTRATION, AND MEMBERS OF THE STATE CAPITOL CAMPUS DESIGN ADVISORY COMMITTEE:

    We, your Memorialists, the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Washington, in legislative session assembled, respectfully represent and petition as follows:

    WHEREAS, Men and women from Washington state have served and continue to serve their communities as law enforcement officers; and

    WHEREAS, These men and women place their own safety at risk on a regular basis to help us all live in safer, healthier communities; and

    WHEREAS, All too often our law enforcement officers are killed or injured while carrying out their duties; and

    WHEREAS, The legislature desires and supports a memorial honoring all those who have served or continue to serve both their community and their fellow citizens as law enforcement officers; and

    WHEREAS, The law enforcement community has expressed both an interest and an ability to raise all needed funds for the design and construction of such a memorial; and

    WHEREAS, The Washington State Council of Police Officers has actively pursued the construction of such a memorial and has formed the Washington State Law Enforcement Memorial Committee to guide such an effort;

    NOW, THEREFORE, Your Memorialists respectfully urge that interested parties including the Department of General Administration and the State Capitol Campus Design Advisory Committee work with the Washington State Law Enforcement Memorial Committee to design and construct a memorial honoring all those who have served as law enforcement officers; and

    Your Memorialists respectfully urge the Washington State Law Enforcement Memorial Committee to recommend a site for the memorial to the State Capitol Campus Design Advisory Committee and the State Capitol Committee which have authority over the siting of memorials on the capitol campus.

    BE IT RESOLVED, That copies of this Memorial be immediately transmitted to the Honorable Gary Locke, Governor, members of the State Capitol Committee, members of the Washington State Law Enforcement Memorial Committee, the Director of the Department of General Administration, and members of the State Capitol Campus Design Advisory Committee.
