HB 1008-S - DIGEST

 

                      (DIGEST AS ENACTED)

 

     Requires that, effective with vehicle registrations due or to become due on January 1, 2001, all vehicle license plates must be issued on a standard background, as designated by the department.

     Provides that, to ensure maximum legibility and reflectivity, the department shall periodically provide for the replacement of license plates.

     Provides that, after a period of three years from the initial issuance of a special license plate series, the department has the sole discretion, based upon the number of sales to date, to determine whether or not to continue issuing the special series.

     Exempts commercial vehicles with a gross weight in excess of 26,000 pounds.

     Allows disabled veterans, POWs, the surviving spouses of POWs, and Medal of Honor recipients to continue to use their free special license plates on motor homes, but restricts the prospective recipients of free special license plates to use them only on standard passenger vehicles.

     Revises fee structure for license renewals.
