    On page 2, after "(2)" on line 21, strike all material through "certificate" on line 30 and insert:  "Beginning not later than September 1, 2001, the state board shall make available one or more means for assessing an applicant's teaching competence.  Beginning May 1, 2002, demonstration of teaching competence shall be required to receive a residency certificate."

    On page 4, line 11, after "section." insert:  "As the advisory committee develops the recommendations regarding the development or selection of assessments required in subsection (2), the advisory committee shall consider methods for applicants to demonstrate teaching competence."

EFFECT: 1. Changes the "knowledge of teaching" assessment required for teacher certification to a "teaching competence" assessment.   2. Requires the advisory committee, which is making recommendations to the State Board of Education regarding the development of the teaching competence assessment, to the consider ways applicants may demonstrate teaching competence.
