HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 99-4706, by Representatives Veloria, Kenney, Santos and Tokuda

 

     WHEREAS, It is the policy of the Washington State Legislature to honor the memory and recognize the contributions of individuals who reflect standards of excellence that enhance the well‑being and quality of life of the citizens of the State of Washington; and

     WHEREAS, John Caughlan had an insatiable thirst for justice and stood up for victims of discrimination; and

     WHEREAS, John Caughlan, a lawyer, spent his life fighting for social justice, in the belief that if it was right, he had to "keep pressing for it," even pursuing several cases of antidiscrimination to the United States Supreme Court; and

     WHEREAS, John Caughlan spent his life pursuing civil liberty on behalf of the downtrodden in the State of Washington, other parts of the United States, and the world, including Nicaragua and the Philippines; and

     WHEREAS, John Caughlan faced discrimination and retribution in his own life and career because of his beliefs and actions on behalf of the oppressed, but never wavered from the path dictated by his social conscience; and

     WHEREAS, John Caughlan will be remembered by those who knew him as a human being with an irrepressible sense of justice, a teacher of great intellect, and a lawyer who defended the cause of the common people despite whatever hardship he had to endure for his beliefs and work; and

     WHEREAS, John Caughlan was a loving husband to his wife, Goldie, an exemplary father to their children Jeremy, Jane, Gilbert, Sean, Katherine, and Mary, and a role model to other members of his family, including his brother, Charles, his six grandchildren and his two great-grandchildren;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the memory of John Caughlan for his lifetime of dedicated work on behalf of justice, civil rights, and peace for the people of the State of Washington, the United States, and the world.
