SENATE RESOLUTION

     WHEREAS, Pfizer Incorporated works closely with the University of Washington and Washington State University, providing grants for the research and development of medicines to treat humans and animals; and

     WHEREAS, Since 1994, Pfizer=s unique Share the Care Program has provided more than 70,000 prescriptions to Washington State citizens in need of medical assistance; and

     WHEREAS, Pfizer provides grants and medicine to community health clinics across the state of Washington; and

     WHEREAS, Pfizer donated over $2 million worth of pharmaceuticals to Washingtonians in need during 1998; and

     WHEREAS, Pfizer was founded in 1849, by two German immigrant cousins in the United States; and

     WHEREAS, Throughout its history, Pfizer has been driven by pioneers who were willing to take risks to make medical advancements that have made history; and

     WHEREAS, In 1941, Pfizer discovered a method to mass produce penicillin, an event that altered medical history; and

     WHEREAS, In 1952, Pfizer established an Agricultural Division devoted to animal health that has become one of the world=s largest producers of pharmaceuticals for animals; and

     WHEREAS, Pfizer has discovered and manufactured some of the world=s most widely used medicines; and

     WHEREAS, In 1999, Forbes Magazine names Pfizer ACompany of the Year@; and

     WHEREAS, Pfizer spends close to $2.5 billion annually on research and development in a wide range of challenging medical fields, including anxiety, arthritis, asthma, cancer, diabetes, infections, migraine, obesity, osteoporosis, pain and stroke, among other illnesses and conditions; and

     WHEREAS, Pfizer is one of the world=s premier pharmaceutical companies, recognized for its success in discovering and developing innovative drugs for humans and animals; and

     WHEREAS, 1999 marks the celebration of Pfizer=s one hundred fiftieth year in business;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington State Senate applaud the important contributions made by the employees and management of Pfizer, Inc. and their long-standing commitment to the health of the people of Washington State; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Washington State Senate congratulate Pfizer, Inc. on its one hundred fiftieth anniversary; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be immediately transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to Pfizer Chief Executive Officer William C. Steere Jr. and all Washington State Pfizer district managers.
