Background:

When the federal government authorized Supplemental Security Income (SSI), it allowed the states to provide an additional state supplement payment to their residents who were receiving federal SSI.  The federal government also allowed states to administer the state supplement payment independently, or to contract with the federal government for administration of the state supplement payment.

Washington chose to contract with the federal government for administration of the state supplement payment, and it has been paying the federal government a fee for this service.

Summary of Bill:

The state is no longer required to contract with the federal government for administration of the state supplement payment.  The state may either contract with the federal government or independently administer the program.
