Brief History:
Committee Activity: Natural Resources, Parks & Shorelines:
______________________________________________________________________________SENATE COMMITTEE ON NATURAL RESOURCES, PARKS & SHORELINES
Staff: Ross Antipa (786‑7413)
Background: Anadromous salmon and steelhead trout that return to state operated hatcheries fall into two categories: broodstock (those fish necessary for fish propagation) and surplus.
Surplus fish may be sold, disposed in landfills, donated to food banks, provided to treaty Indian tribes, transferred to other governmental agencies, or used in stream enrichment programs.
The disposition of surplus hatchery fish is often controversial and the public frequently requests information about the program. An annual surplus salmon report would provide answers to frequently asked questions.
Summary of Bill: The Department of Fish and Wildlife must prepare an annual report on the disposition of surplus hatchery fish and transmit it to the Governor, Legislature, and make it available to the public by January 1 of each year.
Appropriation: None.
Fiscal Note: Requested on January 26, 2001.
Effective Date: Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
