As of February 16, 2001
Title: An act relating to school attendance of school employees' children.
Brief Description: Requiring school policies that allow school employees' children to attend school where the employee is employed.
Sponsors: Senators McAuliffe, McDonald, Carlson, Fairley, Oke, Rasmussen and Kohl‑Welles.
Brief History:
Committee Activity: Education: 2/19/01.
SENATE COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION
Staff: Kelly Simpson (786‑7403)
Background: Under current law, public schools are generally open to individuals aged five through 20 residing in that school district. If a parent or guardian requests for his or her child to attend a school in another district, school districts are encouraged to honor such requests. If a nonresident district agrees to accept a transferring student, and if attendance at the school in the nonresident district is more accessible to the parent's place of work, then a resident district must release the student to the nonresident district.
Additionally, current law requires school districts to adopt policies allowing intradistrict enrollment options (i.e., transfers between schools within a district).
Summary of Bill: School districts must adopt policies allowing school employees' children to attend school where the employee works, at the employee's option.
Appropriation: None.
Fiscal Note: Not requested.
Effective Date: Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
