Authorizing collective bargaining for University of Washington employees who are enrolled in academic programs.


    AN ACT Relating to collective bargaining for University of Washington employees who are enrolled in academic programs; adding a new section to chapter 41.56 RCW; and declaring an emergency.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

    NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 41.56 RCW to read as follows:

    In addition to the entities listed in RCW 41.56.020, this chapter applies to the University of Washington with respect to employees who are enrolled in an academic program and are in a classification in subsections (1) through (11) of this section on any University of Washington campus, including a branch campus.  The employees in subsections (1) through (11) of this section constitute an appropriate bargaining unit:

    (1) Predoctoral instructors;

    (2) Predoctoral lecturers;

    (3) Predoctoral teaching assistants;

    (4) Predoctoral teaching associates I and II;

    (5) Tutors, readers, and graders in all academic units and tutoring centers;

    (6) Predoctoral researchers;

    (7) Predoctoral research assistants;

    (8) Predoctoral research associates I and II;

    (9) Predoctoral staff assistants;

    (10) Predoctoral staff associates I and II; and

    (11) All employees enrolled in an academic program whose duties and responsibilities are substantially equivalent to those employees in subsections (1) through (10) of this section.

 

    NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.  This act is necessary for the immediate preservation of the public peace, health, or safety, or support of the state government and its existing public institutions, and takes effect immediately.
