Strike everything after the enacting clause and insert the following:

"NEW SECTION. Sec. 1. A new section is added to chapter 28A.235 RCW to read as follows:

By July 1, 2004, each school district shall adopt, or amend if necessary, a policy for protecting children in preschool through sixth grade who assist in elementary school kitchens. The policy shall include, but need not be limited to, a permission slip to be signed and returned to the appropriate food service management, guidelines for exposure to hazardous equipment, requirements for reporting injuries, and a list of appropriate kitchen activities and duties that may be assigned to a child assisting or working in an elementary school kitchen. The policy may be integrated into each elementary school's comprehensive safe school plan."

EFFECT: Requires each school district to adopt or amend if necessary a policy for protecting children who help in elementary school kitchens. Describes the components of the policy and permits the district to integrate the policy into each elementary school's safe school plan.
