Staff: Janice Baumgardt (786-7319)
Background: The Legislature has, in the past, designated some portions of the state highway system with memorial names. More recently, the Transportation Commission has developed a policy to name memorials within the state highway system when requested to do so by the Legislature. The commission then adopts a resolution directing the Department of Transportation to coordinate with the family of the individual being memorialized to plan a ceremony to designate the facility with the memorial name. A plaque will be embedded in the structure at this ceremony.
Summary of Bill: The Transportation Commission is requested to designate the 320th Street crossing of Interstate Five in the city of Federal Way the "Maryann Mitchell Memorial Interchange."
Appropriation: None.
Fiscal Note: Not requested.
Effective Date: Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
Testimony For: This is a fitting way to honor Maryann Mitchell and it is a small token of appreciation to her family for all the time she was away from them while doing so much for the state.
Testimony Against: None.
Testified: PRO: Representative Woods.
