Staff: Dario de la Rosa (786-7484)

Background: The governing boards of Washington public institutions of higher education may waive all or a portion of tuition and fees for particular categories of students, including state employees and members of the Washington National Guard. Some permissive and variable waivers are provided on a space-available basis; however, most are not. Students who are granted space available waivers do not count in official enrollment reports.

Summary of Bill: The governing boards of the state's higher education institutions may waive all or a portion of tuition and services and activities fees for children of tenured-faculty and children of full-time faculty who have been with an institution for at least 10 years on a space available basis. Institutions must charge a registration fee of at least $5. Higher education institutions may choose to award waivers to eligible children of persons employed by the institution before granting waivers to other groups.

Appropriation: None.

Fiscal Note: Not requested.

Effective Date: Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
