Background: Driver's licenses and other documents may have a magnetic strip that contains the cardholder's personal information.

Businesses may use devices that can read the personal information on the magnetic strip, and in some cases this information may be stored.

Summary of Bill: A nongovernmental entity may only electronically read an individual's identification document to verify the authenticity of the document or verify the individual's age or identity.

An identification document may include, but is not limited to, the following: driver's licenses or identicards; governmental employee or contractor identification cards; benefit cards; licenses or other similar documents issued by the Department of Licensing; and library cards.
