Background: New or existing buildings on the state capitol grounds are named based on recommendations from the state capitol committee and the Director of the Department of General Administration, with advice from the capitol campus design advisory committee. Buildings can be renamed only after a substantial renovation, or a change in the predominant tenant occupying the building. New or existing buildings can be named or renamed after individuals who have played a significant role in Washington history; the purpose of the building; a predominant tenant agency; a significant place name or natural place in Washington; a Native American tribe located in Washington; a group of people or type of person; or any other appropriate person as recommended by the director of the department of general administration.

Summary of Bill: The John A. Cherberg building is renamed the John A. Cherberg-Sid Snyder building. The Irving R. Newhouse building is renamed the Irving R. Newhouse-Jeannette Hayner building. The buildings are renamed without going through the recommendation process. Technical changes are made to statutes to accommodate the new names, and obsolete statute numbers are corrected.

Testimony For: I would like to honor two of our own. This is a good opportunity to honor them. The sponsorship shows good bi-partisanship. I am very happy to know Sid Snyder. In 1949, he started as an elevator operation. I was always impressed with his leadership ability. I talked with the Secretary of the Senate and he said the fiscal impact would be de minimis.

Testimony Against: None.

Who Testified: PRO: Senator Mark Doumit, Prime Sponsor; Senator Ken Jacobsen, Sponsor.
