WHEREAS, The 2005 legislature in House Concurrent Resolution No.
4408 authorized creation of a joint select committee on secondary
education to examine the basic structure of middle and high schools and
to recommend more effective organizational structures; and
WHEREAS, The joint select committee examined visions of secondary
education reform with the assistance of state and national experts; and
WHEREAS, The joint select committee also examined various models of
secondary education reform being implemented by high schools across the
state and being recommended by state and national organizations and
stakeholders; and
WHEREAS, The joint select committee was able to identify, on a
preliminary basis, several common themes pertaining to effective
secondary education reform; and
WHEREAS, Members of the joint select committee should have the
opportunity to provide findings and recommendations regarding effective
secondary reform based on their work to the K-12 advisory committee and
steering committee of Washington Learns so that these committees can
benefit from, consider, and possibly incorporate the work of the joint
select committee into their deliberations and final report;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, By the House of Representatives of
the state of Washington, the Senate concurring, That the joint select
committee on secondary education created under House Concurrent
Resolution No. 4408 in 2005 summarize its findings and recommendations
and forward them to the advisory and steering committees of Washington
Learns by May 15, 2006.
