TO THE HONORABLE GEORGE W. BUSH, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES,
AND TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE AND THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF
REPRESENTATIVES, AND TO THE SENATE AND HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
UNITED STATES, IN CONGRESS ASSEMBLED, AND TO THE HONORABLE SAMUEL W.
BODMAN, SECRETARY OF THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY:
We, your Memorialists, the Senate and House of Representatives of
the State of Washington, in legislative session assembled, respectfully
represent and petition as follows:
WHEREAS, The secretary of the United States Department of Energy is
required by federal law to establish a next generation nuclear plant
project consisting of research, development, design, construction, and
operation of a prototype plant, including a nuclear reactor; and
WHEREAS, The next generation nuclear plant project established by
the secretary of the United States Department of Energy will be used to
generate electricity; to produce hydrogen; or to generate electricity
and produce hydrogen; and
WHEREAS, Next generation nuclear plants, or generation IV nuclear
plants, will involve technologies that will provide economic, safety,
reliability, and sustainability improvements in current nuclear
reactors; and
WHEREAS, The Idaho national laboratory has been designated the lead
national laboratory for the next generation nuclear plant project to be
established by the secretary of the United States Department of Energy;
and
WHEREAS, The Idaho national laboratory is directed to collaborate
with other national laboratories, institutions of higher education,
other research institutes, industrial researchers, and international
researchers to carry out the next generation nuclear plant project; and
WHEREAS, The United States Department of Energy's Hanford
reservation and the Pacific Northwest national laboratory would also be
appropriate locations for work on next generation nuclear plant
projects and related technologies;
NOW, THEREFORE, Your Memorialists respectfully pray that the United
States congress and the secretary of the United States Department of
Energy establish a next generation nuclear plant project on the United
States Department of Energy's Hanford reservation.
BE IT RESOLVED, That copies of this Memorial be immediately
transmitted to the Honorable George W. Bush, President of the United
States, the Honorable Samuel W. Bodman, Secretary of the United States
Department of Energy, the President of the United States Senate, the
Speaker of the House of Representatives, and each member of Congress
from the State of Washington.
