TO THE HONORABLE DOUGLAS B. MACDONALD, SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION,
AND TO THE WASHINGTON STATE TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION, AND TO THE
WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION:
We, your Memorialists, the Senate and House of Representatives of
the State of Washington, in legislative session assembled, respectfully
represent and petition as follows:
WHEREAS, Ruth Fisher represented the 27th legislative district in
the Washington State House of Representatives from 1982 to 2002; and
WHEREAS, Ruth Fisher served as chairwoman of the House
Transportation Committee and was known for her legendary knowledge of
the Washington transportation system and quick wit; and
WHEREAS, Ruth Fisher was a passionate advocate for funding all
aspects of transportation including highways, ferries, freight mobility
and multimodal transportation, and was known as the mother of Sound
Transit; and
WHEREAS, Bob Oke has represented the 26th legislative district in
the Washington State Senate since 1990; and
WHEREAS, Bob Oke is a long-time member of the Senate Transportation
Committee and serves as the ranking minority member of the Senate
Natural Resources, Ocean and Recreation Committee; and
WHEREAS, Bob Oke has strenuously advocated for improving vehicle
access to the 26th legislative district and the rest of the Kitsap
Peninsula; and
WHEREAS, Ruth Fisher and Bob Oke together provided much of the
impetus for the construction of the second span of the Tacoma Narrows
Bridge;
NOW, THEREFORE, Your Memorialists respectfully request that the
Washington State Transportation Commission commence proceedings to
rename the Tacoma Narrows Bridge the Fisher/Oke Bridge.
BE IT RESOLVED, That copies of this Memorial be immediately
transmitted to the Honorable Douglas MacDonald, Secretary of
Transportation, the Washington State Transportation Commission, and the
Washington State Department of Transportation.
