Background:
Adult family home providers currently are required to complete a department-approved basic
training and continuing education training. For providers who were licensed after September 1,
2001, they must complete at least three hundred twenty hours of successful, direct caregiving
experience obtained after eighteen years of age. For providers applying for a license after
January 1, 2007, they must complete a department-approved forty-eight hour adult family home
administration and business planning class.
Summary of Bill:
In addition to existing minium requirements for adult family home providers, the Department of
Social and Health Services will establish a voluntary adult family home certification program
through the University of Washington geriatric education center. The voluntary adult family
home certification program will include fifty-two hours of class requirements covering physical
and mental health conditions that can be prevented postponed, or alleviated by health promotion
activities. Individuals successfully completing the voluntary adult family home program will be
issued a certified adult family home license by the Department.

Effective Date: The bill takes effect 90 days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
