Background:

Traffic flaggers are sometimes used to provide traffic control when a construction or maintenance project impacts a traffic lane. Other methods used to control traffic include signs or using a pilot car to guide traffic through a work area.


Summary of Amended Bill:

The bill authorizes the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to undertake a pilot project to evaluate the use of electronic flagging devices. Testing must occur at multiple sites and the review must include safety and efficiency considerations. The WSDOT must submit a report of its recommendations to the Legislature by June 30, 2009. If the bill is not funded through the transportation appropriations act, the bill is null and void.

Amended Bill Compared to Original Bill:

The amended bill deletes the $100,000 appropriation and the bill is null and void if not referenced in the Transportation Budget. The amended bill also corrects a spelling error.

Effective Date of Amended Bill: The bill takes effect 90 days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed. However, the bill is null and void if not funded in the Transportation Budget.
