Background: Fifty percent of all fines imposed under the truancy petition provisions are to be applied to the support of the public schools in the school district where the offense was committed and the other 50 percent of the fine is to be paid to the county treasurer for the court's use in enforcing the truancy provisions.

Summary of Bill: The court is required to remit 50 percent of the fines collected under the truancy petition provisions to the child's school district.

Appropriation: None.

Fiscal Note: Not requested.

Effective Date: Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.

Staff Summary of Public Testimony: PRO: The statute allows fines to be imposed and if collected should be split 50/50 between the school district and the courts. School districts have been struggling with the cost of the truancy process and any additional funds would be appreciated.
