technical education curricula that will assist in preparing students to meet the state standard on
the Washington Assessment of Student Learning and achieve a Certificate of Academic
Achievement. The committee was not to extend beyond December 15, 2008.
The advisory committee included members of the Legislature and others. The committee was
directed to provide an initial report by January 2008, and, if necessary, a work plan with
additional reporting deadlines. The initial report included a work plan that extends to January
2010.
Summary of Bill: The career and technical education curricula advisory committee is extended. By December 2009, the committee must report to the Governor and the Legislature on the status of the committee's original recommendations and any additional recommendations the committee finds necessary to accomplish the goals of the initial report.
Appropriation: None.
Fiscal Note: Available.
Committee/Commission/Task Force Created: Yes. (Extending advisory committee.)
Effective Date: Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
Staff Summary of Public Testimony: PRO: The recommendations in the initial report requires piloting of the recommended curriculum in the 2008-09 school year. During the summer of 2009, someone will need to evaluate and make a determination as to whether the curriculum was effective or not. The committee members are each committed to following through the entire process. It needs to be done right and that will take a little more time. We are not asking for any additional funding to extend the committee.
Persons Testifying: PRO: Mark Madison, Edmonds school district; Eleni Papadakis, Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board; Kathleen Lopp, Washington Association for Career and Technical Education.
