Brief Description: Authorizing fire department vehicles to use lights designated for certain law enforcement purposes.

Brief Summary of Bill

  • Allows fire department vehicles to be equipped with the same color lights as law enforcement, but the lights must be visible only from the rear of the vehicle.

Background:

Vehicles operated by public agencies whose law enforcement duties include the authority to stop and detain motor vehicles on the public highways of the state may be equipped with a siren and lights of a color and type that is designated by the Washington State Patrol. An authorized emergency vehicle that is not law enforcement requires one red light with other lighting allowed on the vehicle being flashing amber or white lights. Law enforcement requires one blue light and the other lighting that is allowed on the law enforcement vehicle is either flashing red, amber, or white lights.

Summary of Bill:

Vehicles that are operated by fire departments may be equipped with lights of the same color and type as designated by the Washington State Patrol for law enforcement vehicles. The lights must be only visible from the rear of the fire department vehicle.

Effective Date: The bill takes effect 90 days after adjournment of the session in which the bill is passed.
