Brief Description: Eliminating the license plate retention fee.

  • Eliminates the vehicle license plate retention fee.

Background:

In Washington, replacement of license plates is mandatory when the plates are seven years old or the license plate(s) have been lost, stolen, destroyed or mutilated. A vehicle owner, when replacing the license plates, may choose to retain the license plate number of the old license plates. They can retain the same number as long as the license plate or vehicle has not been reported stolen. The current license plate number retention fee is $20. The fee is deposited into the Multimodal Transportation Account.

Summary of Bill:

The license plate retention fee of $20 for vehicle owners to retain the old license number is eliminated.

Effective Date: The bill takes effect 90 days after adjournment of the session in which the bill is passed.
