Hearing Date: 2/16/09
Staff: Christie Parker (786-7322)
Background:
State law requires all state agencies to allocate 0.5 percent of its appropriation for the original construction of any public building for the acquisition of works of art. The Washington State Arts Commission expends these funds for art. These works of art may be placed on public lands; may be within or outside of a public building or structure; or may be part of a portable, temporary, or loaned exhibition. Although temporary highway buildings such as sheds and warehouses are excluded from this requirement, permanent buildings are not.
Summary of Bill:
Transportation-related buildings that begin construction during the 2009-11 biennium are not required to allocate funds for art. Any savings must be credited to the Motor Vehicle Fund.
Appropriation: None.
Fiscal Note: Not requested.
Effective Date: The bill takes effect 90 days after adjournment of the session in which the bill is passed.
