Brief Description: Authorizing increased compensation for school directors in districts enrolling twenty thousand or more students.

Sponsors: Representative Carlyle.

Brief Summary of Bill

  • Authorizes compensation for school board members in school districts that enroll 20,000 or more students.

Hearing Date: 1/15/14

Staff: Megan Wargacki (786-7194).

Background:

Members of school district boards of directors may receive compensation for attending board meetings and for performing other services on behalf of the school district. Daily compensation is allowed to a maximum rate of $50, and the annual total may not exceed $4,800. The provisions of such compensation must be authorized by board resolution, at a regularly scheduled meeting.

Compensation must be authorized only from local levy funds, and may not cause the state to incur a funding obligation. Any director may waive compensation by filing a written waiver with the school district. This compensation is in addition to reimbursement for expenses.

The Washington Citizens' Commission establishes salaries for elected officials. The current annual salary for legislators is $42,106.

Summary of Bill:

Members of the board of directors of a school district that enrolls 20,000 or more students may receive daily compensation in an amount established by the board, but may not exceed the annual salary for a legislator as established by the Washington Citizens' Commission on salaries for elected officials.

Appropriation: None.

Fiscal Note: Available.

Effective Date: The bill takes effect 90 days after adjournment of the session in which the bill is passed.
