|
Hearing Date: 2/24/14
Staff: Barbara McLain (786-7383).
Background:
The Retooling to Teach Mathematics and Science Conditional Scholarship (Scholarship) was established in 2007. It provides financial support for current K-12 teachers and teachers with an elementary education certificate employed in positions not requiring that certificate to complete a middle level or secondary endorsement in mathematics or science. Each Scholarship provides up to $3,000 per year to pay for tuition, test fees, and other educational expenses. The Scholarship is a loan that is forgiven for teaching service in the new endorsement subject in a Washington public school. One year of loan is forgiven for every two years of service. The Scholarship is administered by the Student Achievement Council, but the Professional Educator Standards Board selects the recipients.
During the 2013-2015 biennium, funding for all new conditional scholarships has been suspended.
Summary of Bill:
The Scholarship is renamed the Educator Retooling Conditional Scholarship and expanded to include support for teachers seeking an endorsement in special education, bilingual education, or English Language Learner.
Appropriation: None.
Fiscal Note: Available.
Effective Date: The bill takes effect 90 days after adjournment of the session in which the bill is passed.
