Title: An act relating to facility-based vocational services.

Brief Description: Recognizing the need for facility-based vocational services for persons with developmental disabilities.

Sponsors: Senators Hewitt, McAuliffe and Conway.

Brief History:

Committee Activity: Health Care: 2/12/13.

SENATE COMMITTEE ON HEALTH CARE

Staff: Kathleen Buchli (786-7488)

Background: Sheltered workshops are rehabilitation facilities, or part of a rehabilitation facility, operated by a nonprofit corporation. Sheltered workshops employ individuals with disabilities in manufacture work or handiwork as an interim step in the rehabilitative process for those who cannot be readily absorbed in the competitive labor market or during such time as employment opportunities for them in the competitive labor market do not exist.

Summary of Bill: The term sheltered workshop is changed to facility-based vocational services. The Department of Social and Health Services must consider facility-based vocational services as a viable work preparation option for individuals with disabilities and must include targeted input from families and residential providers statewide when considering the provision of facility-based vocational services.

Appropriation: None.

Fiscal Note: Not requested.

Committee/Commission/Task Force Created: No.

Effective Date: Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
