SENATE COMMITTEE ON HEALTH CARE

Staff: Bonnie Kim (786-7316)

Background: Personal emergency response services provide elderly and handicapped persons with a small device, typically worn around the neck or wrist, equipped with a help button. When an elderly or handicapped person experiences a medical, accidental, or other type of emergency, the person presses the button to activate an automatic call to the servicing company's call center. A company employee may then alert local authorities to the customer's condition or situation.

Summary of Bill: Employees of companies providing life alert services must provide the location and known medical conditions of their customers when requested by first responders or firefighters, law enforcement, and emergency medical personnel. Life alert services are defined as services provided for profit that allow persons in need of emergency assistance to contact a call center through the activation of a wearable device, such as a pendant or bracelet. A person in violation of this requirement may be assessed up to $250 for a class 1 civil infraction.

Appropriation: None.

Fiscal Note: Not requested.

Committee/Commission/Task Force Created: No.

Effective Date: Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
