WHEREAS, The Washington State House of Representatives recognize
the sacrifice and bravery of our veterans; and
WHEREAS, Bryan Hoddle teaches at Tenino Middle School and is the
former Boys' Cross Country Coach at Tenino High School, and his
athletes have amassed numerous state championships and national age
group titles; and
WHEREAS, Coach Hoddle was the recipient of the 2001-2002 Veterans
of Foreign War Teacher of the Year Award for the State of Washington
and the 2001-2002 Veterans of Foreign War National Citizenship
Education Teacher Award; and
WHEREAS, Bryan Hoddle has worked extensively with injured soldiers
at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center Hospital in Washington, D.C. and
at the Lakeshore Foundation in Birmingham, Alabama, helping amputee,
blind, and traumatic brain injured soldiers. Coach Hoddle has worked
with over 1,000 injured soldiers, assisting them in their recovery, as
well as helping them to discover the gift of running; and
WHEREAS, Coach Hoddle started coaching Paralympic athletics in
1996, where he learned to train amputee athletes and met and coached
Tony Volpentest, who was born without hands or feet, to a world record
in the 100 meters at the Paralympic Games in Atlanta; and
WHEREAS, Coach Hoddle was named Program Director for the USA
Paralympics Track and Field Performance Coaching Staff in 2002; and
WHEREAS, Coach Hoddle was selected as Head Coach for the USA
Paralympics Track and Field Team in 2004 and earned 26 medals in
Athens, Greece; and
WHEREAS, Coach Hoddle currently serves on the Board of Trustees for
the Invictus Foundation, a nonprofit that assists service members and
veterans dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental
wounds of war; and
WHEREAS, Coach Hoddle was selected a Runner's World Magazine 2013
HERO;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington State House of
Representatives does hereby honor the significant achievements and
lasting legacy made by Coach Bryan Hoddle.
