Title: An act relating to licensed health care professionals' information at the time of license renewal.

Brief Description: Requiring certain health professionals to provide information on primary place of practice at the time of license renewal.

Sponsors: Senator Hill.

Brief History:

Committee Activity: Health Care: 1/19/16.

SENATE COMMITTEE ON HEALTH CARE

Staff: Kathleen Buchli (786-7488)

Background: The Secretary of the Department of Health (Secretary) establishes requirements for license renewal for many health care professions including dental hygienists and midwives.

Other health care professionals are regulated by that profession's commission. For example, the Dental Quality Assurance Commission establishes license renewal requirements for dentists, the Medical Quality Assurance Commission establishes license renewal requirements for physicians and physician assistants, the Nursing Quality Assurance Commission establishes license renewal requirements for nurses, and the Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission establishes license renewal requirements for pharmacists.

In 2015, the Legislature passed into law a requirement that physicians, physician assistants, osteopathic physicians, and osteopathic physician assistants provide information about their current professional practice at the time of license renewal. No other health care profession is required to provide this information at point of licensure.

Summary of Bill: Dental hygienists, dentists, midwives, pharmacists, physicians, physician assistants, and nurses must provide information on their primary place of practice at the time of license renewal.

Appropriation: None.

Fiscal Note: Not requested.

Committee/Commission/Task Force Created: No.

Effective Date: Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.

Staff Summary of Public Testimony: PRO: We do not have data on where these health care providers practice. We need this information so that we can forecast for health care needs in the state. We support the collection of better demographic information. The home address of the health care provider does not provide us with enough information on their practice and we need an accurate picture of the health care work force.

Persons Testifying: PRO: Senator Hill, prime sponsor; Nova Gattman, Workforce Board.

Persons Signed In To Testify But Not Testifying: No one.
