AN ACT Relating to the department of natural resources; and creating new sections.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.     The legislature finds that:

          (1) The resources managed by the department of natural resources represent a unique heritage for Washington's citizens.

          (2) The tidelands, aquatic lands, grazing, agricultural, transition, and forest lands produce economic value for the state and provide environmental values.

          (3) Management actions by the department of natural resources affect other state resources, both public and private.

          (4) A long-term plan for use of the state's resources managed by the department of natural resources would benefit the citizens of the state.

 

          NEW SECTION.  Sec. 2.     The legislature directs the department of natural resources to prepare a long-term strategic plan for the use of its resources.  The plan shall include but need not be limited to:  Forest management, including timber sales and harvesting, management practices, chemical application, and land exchanges; leases for oil and gas, commercial uses, agricultural uses, and aquatic uses; the role of public and trust involvement; and a plan for protecting other public resources.  The report shall be submitted to the legislature by January 1, 1986.
