AN ACT Relating to Veterans' Day; and amending RCW 28A.02.070.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

        Sec. 1.  Section 12, chapter 15, Laws of 1970 ex. sess. as last amended by section 2, chapter 120, Laws of 1977 ex. sess. and RCW 28A.02.070 are each amended to read as follows:

          (1) Veterans' Day shall be observed in each common school as defined in RCW 28A.01.060 in either of the following ways:

          (a) On the school day preceding the eleventh day of November of each year, there shall be presented ((in each common school as defined in RCW 28A.01.060)) a program ((suitable to the observance of Veterans' Day.

          The responsibility for the preparation and presentation of such program)) approximating sixty minutes in length ((shall be with the principal or head teacher of each school building and such program shall embrace)) embracing topics tending to instill a loyalty and devotion to the institutions and laws of this state and nation.  The responsibility for the preparation and presentation of the program shall be with the principal or head teacher of each school building; or

          (b) During the school week preceding the eleventh day of November of each year, the principal or head teacher in each building may authorize classroom teachers to include age-appropriate exercises relating to the observance of Veterans' Day into the grade level activities.

          (2) The superintendent of public instruction and each educational service district superintendent, by advice and suggestion, shall aid in the preparation of such programs if such aid be solicited.
