BACKGROUND:

 

In 1986 the Legislature created the Washington Award for Excellence in Education Program.  Under the program, three teachers and three principals from each congressional district and one superintendent and one school board statewide are recognized for their contributions, leadership, and commitment to education. There is no provision under the program to allow school administrators other than principals or a superintendent, or educational staff associates, to be eligible for an award.

 

SUMMARY:

 

Three principals or administrators from each congressional district will be recognized annually under the Washington Award for Excellence in Education Program.

 

Educational staff associates shall be considered as teachers for purposes of the Washington Award For Excellence in Education Program.

 

The total number of awards which may be granted annually is not affected.

 

 

SUMMARY OF PROPOSED SENATE AMENDMENT:

 

The Superintendent of Public Instruction is encouraged to consult with educational staff associates in addition to other education professionals in establishing selection criteria.
