AS REPORTED BY COMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENT & NATURAL RESOURCES, FEBRUARY 22, 1988

BACKGROUND:

Smelt fishing derbies attract thousands of people and are important to the economy of towns such as LaConner and Castle Rock.

In 1988 smelt fishermen have had to purchase a personal use license costing $3.50 each.  Persons who organize smelt derbies prefer that the derby participants not be required to purchase personal use licenses.

SUMMARY:

The director may allow the taking of smelt by smelt derby participants without the need for a personal use license.  Derby organizers must apply to the department with an application fee of $25 for each derby.

SUMMARY OF PROPOSED SENATE AMENDMENT:

Smelt fishermen are not required to have a personal use license.

Appropriation:    none

Revenue:    none

Fiscal Note:      none requested
