AS REPORTED BY COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION, APRIL 2, 1987

BACKGROUND:

A strong, balanced transportation system is vital to the economic growth and social well-being of the state of Washington and its citizens.  Achieving that system depends upon the ability of the private sector and government to work in concert to provide an efficient, effective, integrated transportation network.

By 1991 the federally-funded Interstate highway system is scheduled for completion.  That event may precipitate significant changes in the allocation of federal highway and transit funds to the states.

Presently there is no forum whereby the providers of all modes of transportation, and all users of transportation--both public and private sector--can convene to begin planning for transportation in the Northwest into the twenty-first century.

SUMMARY:

The Legislature, through the Legislative Transportation Committee, resolves to sponsor a Northwest regional symposium in the 1987-89 biennium on "Transportation In The Future".  Participation in development and presentation of the symposium is encouraged for the Office of the Governor, all affected state and local governmental agencies, and the private sector.
