AS REPORTED BY COMMITTEE ON PARKS & ECOLOGY, MARCH 30, 1987

BACKGROUND:

Among their other duties, the Ecological Commission has recently begun to present Environmental Awards to recognize significant contributions by individuals, organizations and businesses who have demonstrated a commitment to protecting the environmental quality of the State.  There is currently no program to recognize achievements in the area of solid and hazardous waste management.

The Solid Waste Advisory Committee was established in 1969 to provide advice to the Department of Ecology on all matters of solid and hazardous waste management.  The committee consists of eleven members including representative of: the public, local government, agriculture, industry, public health, and the refuse removal and resource recovery industries.

SUMMARY:

The Solid Waste Advisory Committee is directed to recommend to the governor a recipient for a "governor's award of excellence". The award will be given annually for an outstanding achievement by an industry, company, or individual in the area of solid or hazardous waste management.
