Senate Committee on Judiciary
Senate Hearing Date(s):February 3, 1987
Senate Staff:Lidia Mori (786-7461)
AS OF FEBRUARY 2, 1987
BACKGROUND:
Currently, in order to terminate child relationships of a parent, there must be clear, cogent and convincing evidence that it is in the best interests of the child and that the parent has failed to perform parental duties in such a way as to show a substantial lack of regard for parental obligations. The parent-child relationship of a parent may also be terminated if the parent fails to appear at the requisite hearing, after receiving notification of it.
SUMMARY:
A parent may not object to the termination of his or her parent-child relationship if that parent has failed to pay past due child support for that child.
