BACKGROUND:

 

In 1947, the Legislature established the Deschutes Basin project.  This project authorized the creation of a lake behind the capital to fill in existing tideflats.  The lake is now known as Capitol Lake.

 

The late George F. Yantis was among those primarily responsible for spearheading the Deschutes Basin legislation.  Mr. Yantis was a member of the House from 1931-1937 and 1945-1947.  He was Speaker in 1933 and 1945.

 

The Deschutes Basin was officially named Capitol Lake in 1975 by both the state and federal Boards on Geographic Names.

 

SUMMARY:

 

The lake behind the capital at the south end of Budd Inlet is designated "Lake Yantis."
