BACKGROUND:

 

The promotion of mental sports such as chess, checkers, go, and bridge, offers educational and economic development opportunities to the State of Washington.

 

SUMMARY:

 

A Mental Sports Competition and Research Commission is established consisting of five members appointed by the Governor.  The commission may exercise all of the powers of a public corporation and issue industrial development revenue bonds which shall not exceed $600,000.  International tournaments in chess and bridge with prize funds of $80,000 each are mandated.  A report to the Legislature on the viability and revenue-generating capability of the commission is required.
