BYSenator Barr
Authorizing election of emergency medical service district commissioners.
Senate Committee on Governmental Operations
Senate Hearing Date(s):February 19, 1987
Senate Staff:Eugene Green (786-7405); Sam Thompson (786-7754)
AS OF FEBRUARY 12, 1987
BACKGROUND:
An emergency medical service district can be created in all or a portion of the unincorporated area of the county. The district may be created countywide. It may impose a regular property tax levy in an amount equal to 25 cents or less for six consecutive years when specifically authorized by a majority of at least 3/4 of the electors. The members of the county legislative authority serve as the governing body of the emergency medical service district.
It has been suggested that greater citizen input could be achieved if the district elected its own commissioners.
SUMMARY:
If a county legislative authority finds that the public interest would best be served by the election of district commissioners, it shall provide for the election of three commissioners (six year terms) at a general election.
Provision is made for initial election, staggering of terms, and filling of vacancies.
