BACKGROUND:
Current law permits hotels, motels and private clubs with accommodations which hold class H licenses to sell spirituous liquor by the bottle provided the patrons are registered guests of the hotel or club and the liquor is intended for consumption on the premises.
Motels which do not hold a class H liquor license are not permitted to sell spirituous liquor by the bottle.
SUMMARY:
A class M license is established which may be issued to a motel that holds no other liquor license. A motel holding a class M license is authorized to sell spirituous liquor, beer and wine to registered guests for consumption in their rooms. A license fee is set at $200 per year and licensees are required to purchase all spirituous liquor from the Liquor Control Board.
A motel is defined as a facility that offers three or more lodging units to travelers and transient guests.
