AS REPORTED BY COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENTAL OPERATIONS, MARCH 4, 1987

BACKGROUND:

In 1947 the Legislature established the Deschutes Basin project.  This project authorized the creation of a lake behind the capital to fill existing tideflats.  The lake is now known as Capitol Lake.

The late George F. Yantis was among those primarily responsible for spearheading the Deschutes Basin legislation.  Mr. Yantis was a member of the House from 1931-1937 and 1945-1947.  He was Speaker in 1933 and 1945.

The Deschutes Basin was officially named Capitol Lake in 1975 by both the state and federal Boards on Geographic Names.

On the southwest shore of Capitol Lake there exists an interpretive center.  The center and surrounding grounds were established to provide a setting for the interpretation of Washington State wildlife.

It has been suggested that in recognition of the late Mr. Yantis' contribution to Washington State government, and his efforts in enacting the Deschutes Basin legislation, it would be an appropriate tribute to designate the Capitol Lake Interpretive Center in his memory.

SUMMARY:

The Interpretive Center on the southwest shore of Capitol Lake and the surrounding grounds are designated the George F. Yantis Interpretive Center and Grounds.

Appropriation:    The sum of up to $30,000 is appropriated from the general fund to the Department of General Administration for the biennium ending June 30, 1989.

Fiscal Note:      none requested

SUMMARY OF PROPOSED COMMITTEE AMENDMENT:

The appropriation to the Department of General Administration is changed from $30,000 to $45,000.
