AS REPORTED BY COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION, JANUARY 18, 1988

BACKGROUND:

The Superintendent of Public Instruction is required to develop annually model curriculum programs or curriculum guidelines in three subject areas.  These model curriculum programs or guidelines must be integrated with other subject areas and must include guidelines so that vocational and applied courses can fulfill some or all of the courses required by the state for high school graduation.  The connection between schooling and post-high school work and life experiences could be strengthened by emphasizing the development of problem-based model curriculum programs or guidelines.

SUMMARY:

In developing model curriculum programs or curriculum guidelines, the Superintendent of Public Instruction, to the extent possible, should emphasize a problem-based orientation to help students understand how and why the curriculum may be important to their future employment and ability to be responsible citizens.

The model curriculum programs or curriculum guidelines must include statements of suggested resources, including appropriate community and business and labor resources.

A technical amendment is made to reinsert existing statutory language.

Appropriation:    none
